Description

Haberdashers’ Adams is a selective state grammar school, offering an exceptional education to day pupils and boarders, located in the rural market town of Newport in Shropshire. Newport is located approximately 25 minutes from Stafford, 60 minutes from Birmingham and 90 minutes from London Euston by train.

We welcome boys aged 11-18 as day pupils or boarders, and girls aged 16-18 as day girls in our Sixth Form. We are going fully co-ed from September 2024. Boarding is an integral part of school life and contributes much to the ethos of our school. There is no charge for education so boarders pay only for the provision associated with boarding making Haberdashers’ Adams much more affordable than the independent school sector.

Junior boarders (Years 7-10) start their boarding life at Longford Hall, a beautiful Grade II* listed Georgian mansion, set in one hundred acres of grounds, with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. They are cared for by a boarding housemaster and his team of matrons and tutors who all work together to create a welcoming and homely environment.

Senior boarders (Years 11-13) continue their boarding life in Beaumaris Hall, our purpose-built home metres from the entrance to the main school. Senior boarding aims to help pupils gain additional independence and is an ideal stepping stone between home life and university. Across the two facilities, we offer the best of town and country living.

The school’s reputation for high academic results proceeds it as too does its strong House system and House competitions. There is a huge focus on providing pupils with as many opportunities as possible to try new things and to take part in the wide range of extra-curricular activities offered. Life is exciting, busy and fast-paced at Haberdashers’ Adams which has some fantastic facilities, including a dedicated Sixth Form Centre with its own lecture theatre, seminar rooms and bistro, a modern music and performing arts centre, a brand-new teaching block for art and maths, and some superb sports facilities including a swimming pool and over 100 acres of playing fields.

Traditional Values

We have a long and proud tradition of successfully educating generations of young people with a passion for helping our pupils to develop as confident, articulate young men and women who are interesting, balanced and who care for each other.

Haberdashers’ Adams has been educating pupils for over 365 years. While most aspects of school life have changed beyond recognition during that time there are important features which remain the same. The main building, known as Big School, is where the school was founded in 1656 and the library is the original schoolroom; all other buildings have been added as the school site has expanded.

Pupils are required to work hard both during lessons and with their homework. Teaching staff provide a lot of support to pupils but in return expect pupils to demonstrate commitment to their studies and be engaged with their subject. The school provides an extensive range of extra-curricular activities including a very active Combined Cadet Force, the Duke of Edinburgh award, a debating society as well as numerous academic, music, drama and sports clubs. Pupils are expected to take part in these either in quality or quantity but preferably both. To gain the most from their time at Haberdashers’ Adams pupils need to be prepared to try new things and to step out of their comfort zone to see what they can achieve.

Pupils also benefit from being part of the Haberdashers’ family with access to advice and support from members of one of the City of London’s oldest livery companies.

Modern Approach

While we are proud of the school’s heritage we do not allow the history of the school to dictate our future. Teachers are encouraged to use their own creativity and flair in the way they teach their lessons. If you take a tour of the school you are likely to see a massive variation in teaching styles from a quiet classroom of pupils learning from a textbook through to pupils on the playground acting out important battles of the Russian revolution.

Pupils are set homework online and will often submit it via this route too. They are encouraged to use technology to support their learning and in preparation for the world of work. Innovative projects mean pupils are engaged and challenged across all stages of their education.

Whilst we have high expectations of pupils we strongly believe that the most important aspect of your child’s life at school is how happy they are. In our experience a happy child will thrive and we warmly invite you to find out whether our school is one where your child would be happy.
