Following his childhood dream of playing American football professionally, he was drafted into the Canadian Football League by the Montreal Alouettes, where he enjoyed a brief stint, before transferring to Germany to play ten seasons in the German Football League. During his sports career Adrian continued to hone his academic skills completing his PGCE in English and Drama, Master of Arts in English (Critical Theory), and PhD in English (Critical Pedagogy and Contemporary Literature), all from the University of Exeter. After finishing his PhD and retiring from his American football career Adrian was appointed as a Lecturer of English at the University of Zurich where he spent five years before relocating to the UK. For three years he was the Head of the Environmental Faculty, Language and Literacy Coordinator, Teacher of English, and Assistant Houseparent at UWC Atlantic College in Wales before being appointed as Deputy Head Co-Curriculum at Sevenoaks School in Kent. Adrian has spent the last four years overseeing all of the experiential learning at Sevenoaks, including music, sport, drama, as well as all of the community impact, outreach and partnership work of the school. During his career Irfan has held a number of leadership roles in education including Headmaster of Sexey’s School, Deputy Head (Academic) at Bedford school, Head of Science and Chemistry at St Benedict’s School, Ealing, Senior Housemaster at Whitgift School, as well as being the Assistant Housemaster and Head of PSHE at the Haberdashers’ Aske’s School for Boys. Educated at Emanuel school, London, Irfan graduated from King’s College, University of London with a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, followed by a PGCE in Secondary Education and is currently studying for an MA in Educational Leadership. At university he was active on the Student Council and played representative sport, including rowing and cricket. Irfan has an active role in education and, boarding and is on the Executive Committee of the Boarding Schools’ Association, having been its Vice Chair, and is also the chair of the London Boarding Forum. He is on the board of directors at AGBIS and the Independent Schools’ Association and sits on the board of practitioners for the ground-breaking ‘AI in Education’ movement set up by Sir Anthony Seldon. In addition, Irfan is a co-founder of the Inclusion and Diversity group for the Independent Schools’ Council, and he also sits on the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Independent Education. He has spoken at several national and international conferences including Disrupted23 and was recently nominated for Tatler’s ‘Best Head of a Public School’. He also sat on the board of education at the Diocese of Bath and Wells and sits on the Professional Development Committee for the Society of Heads. Outside of school, he enjoys art and attending galleries, museums, and concerts. He is a keen runner having recently completed the London Marathon, enjoys swimming, ballroom dancing, following Arsenal FC and engaging in politics. He is married to Jo, the Head of Science of a leading London independent girls’ school and the CEO of the award-winning ‘Karma Curry’. They have two daughters and their Jack Russell terrier, Rodney.
